  • I had cause to look at Devon hedges last year. They seem to cut out the turves, build a small wall of stones using mud as mortar about 2 feet high and put soil, the turves and hazel/hawthorn cuttings on the top. They then seem to ditch and bank the sides.
    Don't know if that helps?
  • How steep is the wall you are planning?
  • Hi Paul - this may give you some ideas? http://www.skagafjordur.is/upload/files/IX-Turf.pdf . The nice green hedges and banks you see in Cornwall and Devon are in fact fairly hefty structures of stone with a core of rammed soil or 'rab'. They will green up over a few years to give the look of a grassy bank - but they are not as many motorist has found in the lanes of Devon and Cornwall!

Other methods seem to use and interlocking wooden retaining wall which is then sprayed with a seed mix, or a seed impregnated mat is used. It's going to depend how high you want to go I would imagine. Provide you use a good soil that binds together and lean the sides of the wall inwards then I would suggest that you have a play and see what works best. Also remeber to keep the base nice and wide relative to the top.

To answer you question no, but hope this helps. Oh can send you some pictures of a turf sculpted park in Lisbon if that would help
