Traveling costs? One off price or Per mile...

Hi GangI`m wanting to pick your brains on distance jobs, and how to go about charging for them.I`ve been asked to get together a package for a client, that will entail doing the same fairly straight forward job but possibly all over the country. This will be a service that he will market via his own websites and charge me out so to speak to do the job. What I need to do is work out a price per job which is fairly easy, and then the tricky bit is to do with the traveling, Do I charge a day rate and it doesnt matter where in the country I end up, or do I charge a set rate per mile? If so how much?Would i be better, just saying to the client, It will cost you ££ per day? This could potentially be well worth my while if I can come up with an attractive package, that works for me aswel as the client. You help will be much appreciated.Cheers Jim

  • Cheers guys. Interesting reading that Phil.

In reply to Clive, It would be quite hard to include the traveling costs in the price I give to the client as I could be anywhere in the country from portsmouth to aberdeen. Would adding 25% cover me on a job if I was traveling a long distance from say here in cheshire to maybe the south cost an back?
  • Would a Spons book help me? Does anybody use them? Any good, what do you think? Where can i get hold of one. They sell them at play.com for about £27. Is that a good price?
  • if the job takes an hour to drive ,work that hour into the job quote at your hourly rate,if you charge £25 an hour and pay the guys £10,that's £15 towards fuel etc.we tend to slightly overprice the distance jobs for that reason,on maintenance jobs,we will reduce costs if we can pick up another job in that local
