Trade accounts with garden centres

HiI'm fairly new to garden services and wondered if any older and wiser LJN folk could advise me of how to get a good trade account with garden centres etc in case clients want any new planting. Also are there any online ones you would recommend?CheersJames

  • Buy from a Wholesale or Trade Nursery and pay the same price for plants as Garden Centres do, is my advice.

This 10% or so that some Garden Centres offer as discount is I believe very unfair to Landscapers and Designers, when you can buy directly from where they do.

Most Garden Centres mark up by a minimum 2.35 or (double plus vat if you prefer), why shouldn't Landscapers and Designers?

If you need any help on this please contact me.

I buy the majority of my plants from wholesale nursery. However I have a good relationship with one of my local nurseries. As well as giving me 15% which comes in handy for buying the odd plant, the plant manager refers a bit of work to me. In return I give him a slab of beer now and again.

The best thing to do is ask. It's amazing where you can get a discount.
  • Cheers for the advice

  • I agree with the other responses. I have accounts with a few local wholesale nursery's which I use for big orders. Most are about a 30min drive away so its not worth it for one or 2 plants. So in addition I have trade cards with the local garden centres also, these give me 10-15% discount which is better than nothing and useful if you need to buy other sundry items

    Hi James,

We visited the Four Oaks trade show yesterday and were talking to some guys at Botany Bay Nurseries, they are based in Redditch, could be of some help to you, very friendly.

There are quite a few nurseries around you, look for ones, that offer cash n carry. Nurseries vary in operation size a lot. Some are more approachable than others.

Have a look at the editorial index on the Four Oaks website http://www.fouroaks-tradeshow.com/directory.html JustMust perennnials were another small scale supplier.

Also the HTA site exhibitor list http://www.nationalplantshow.co.uk/page.php?pageid=26

Some nurseries only want to sell plants by the thousand, others have very small minimum orders.

    Good luck
  • Thanks Geoffrey. Pretty sure I've been to Botany Bay nurseries as a customer, especially as I live about five miles away! Top tip!
