Hi Paul, most insurance companies will ask for some form of proof of ownership (such as receipts etc.) However, it does depend on the price as well, for example if it's a very expensive piece of equipment then proof of ownership is usually mandatory.

As David has already said but I would add the following:
Make sure you mark your equipment for ease of identification and then photograph it (preference being date stamped)and keep the image with the receipt.
Some insurance companies are better than others at paying out. Make sure you read the very small print as some will not cover you if the tools are left in the van under certain conditions. Mine states that it has to be in a manned car-park or secure compound if left unattended after work hours or not actually working on a job! The list is endless but NFU seem to be one of the better companies but at a price.
