For the researching visitor there's a wealth of landscaping ideas, garden design ideas, lawn advice tips and advice about garden maintenance.

I was wondering how everyone takes precautions against ticks whilst working outside in gardens or open ground. So come on all you gardeners, designers and landscapers, tell me how you deal with the little burrowers?

There are some nasty diseases from ticks, Lyme disease probably everybody knows about?

But there is some more news now about the continental European tick Dermacentor reticulatus being found in southern England and there being more ticks on dogs than anyone had thought. Then you working outside might already know just how many ticks there are.

The warmer weather is bringing them out and some days there are lots suddenly. I can take maybe fifteen from the dog in one day during a walk.

Here is the blog news about disease carrying ticks in Britain that I posted "Ticks from continental europe established in southern England".

I would love to hear what you do about them.

  • I have a set of tweezers for removing sheep-ticks.

I get bitten about once a month in Summer due to the large numbers of sheep near me and in my area.

More often If i go mountain biking.

Other than that - Long sleeved shirts whenever possible or in areas which may have ticks.

  • Have you tried Frontline for your dog, he must be in a bit of a state if picking up that many ticks.

Have never heard of equivelent product for humans just wear long trousers and socks when think there is a risk.

  • Ive never seen any ticks before but last year i got bitten in the neck by a horse fly.....nasty.
  • I have used Frontline, it doesn't stop the ticks but kills them if they bite the dog. But I heard last week that Frontline has an insecticide in it and that it is better to use something else. I don't remember the name of it but it has tee tree oil in it.
  • 3314625240?profile=originalMercuracrome - that takes me back! I remember an EOD medic in Kuwait making my hand look like I was wearing a reddish-brown glove. Took forever to get rid of the stain. I'm all for old-fashioned remidies, but some, like this, are best left in the past - see the material data safety sheet at http://msds.chem.ox.ac.uk/ME/merbromin.html. I use the tick removal tool and hydrogen peroxide myself. Stings like hell, but it works.
  • Yes I agree the Mercuracrome sounds like one I will miss but I like the sound of the Neem oil. I just looked at the Frontline packet and is says it contains Fipronil, an insecticide/acaricide.  It has a long list of warnings unfortunately.

  • I hand't realised I must admit that there were different types of tick they all looked the same to me except bigger or smaller or darker but I thought that was to do with their age and diet euh
  • So the rumours are true - Paul is built from metal!

It has never failed to kill off infected wounds, even those treated with iodine or other antiseptic that have gone septic. I import it from Australia as it is banned virtualy everywere else.

Id rather have mercury in my blood stream than get septicimiyer.

I've updated this thread today: http://www.landscapejuicenetwork.com/xn/detail/2074886:Topic:139171

I've been bitten and I have to take a week long course of antibiotics.
The doctor wasn't concerned and says I don't need to worry because I have acted in a timely fashion.
