The Holy Grail

The holy grail of any business is "Customer ownership", and this should be considered THE most important thing in any business.

Your aim is to create the perception in your customers mind that you are their landscapers, so when they talk about you they say "my gardeners" not just we have so & so gardeners.

Every time you have contact with your customer try to mention your business name, or give them some form of document that shows all your services.

If you haven't had contact with a customer for a long period, then send them a letter every four to six months. Keeping that thread of communication alive will pay off in the end.

We send fridge magnets with our Christmas cards. They have the logo on and a calendar on. I'm always amazed when I'm inside a customers house how many I see (current and previous years) stuck on fridges etc!
  • I think we are at an advantage to other trades such as electricians, plumbers, gas etc as in maintenance we are regular visitors like window cleaners so customer ownership ('my' rather than 'the')is easier to achieve. Also its much easier to upsell to current customers than resell to new (lawn care in addition to baqsic maintenance being an example).

  • We give out pens once a year, and a box of chocolates at Christmas.
Its very strange that nobody seems to give gardeners Christmas tips, but milk and postal delivery people get quite a big boost to their wages at that time of year.
