Having worked over there, the culture is different, the clients more demanding and accepting of the service industry mentality.
You can not directly compare the two markets, a lot is somewhat irrelevant and thus you need to cherry pick that which is likely to work here.
Oh....and beware the "American Way" is not always best for Europe/UK and would always take everything with a pinch of salt :-)
Just take software applications for instance, some work over here, some do not.
I too know a reasonable amount about the American culture, as my wife is American. But the point is that they dedicate themselves to doing better, whereas in the Uk I think people seem to have the attitude of "everything will be OK", and don't strive to be better tomorrow than they were today.

What I'm trying to explain here is that the Americans will discuss just about anything you want to know about business, but in the Uk you mention "Business", and everyone goes into hibernation.

When I was studying marketing we did some stuff on it.
It's about the quality of the discussions, not the quantity (and boy is there 'quantity' on the US forums, but quality ? ) You see the same thing on multiple forums.
The markets are different, the personalities are similar but exhibited differently. We are more reserved.

Why is it such a dirty word, when every business in the private sector has to make a profit to exist.
I think if we had more discussions about "business", "money" and "profit", I think a lot of people in this trade would be in a better position. What do you think?

We are British, they are American. Different culture, different outlook on life - they love their country, I love mine. Try the 'American way' Adrian - half of your customers would probably
run a mile!
The big problem with this industry is that Gardeners only think of themselves as Gardeners, when in fact they should be thinking of themselves as a "Business that does Gardening".
I think its time that the industry started to act like professionals, work like professionals, and charge like professionals, not like a bunch of charity workers.
