Tanaka Hedge cutters, buying & fixing

Both my long arm and 2520 have been playing up recently..they have had 4 years hard work but now don't rev up that well and slow a lot depending on which position they are held...?

Ordered up a new THT2520SB as I can't be without my tools..did look at Sthil but as mow direct was doing a deal (359 delivered) and I already have a second for at worst spares...spare blades are always handy.

I'm going to pop the carb off the new and try on the old one to see if that cures it's sickness..if so maybe I could get away with a new carb on the long arm too..here is hoping.

Is rebuilding Walbro carbs worth while ?

Cheers

Mark

  • yes it poss just needs new diapham kit

  • Well quick update just for reference..as the Tanaka's run a 25-1 mix I thought the exhaust might have coked up a bit so popped it off the long arm and gave it a good blasting with a blow torch until it was burning quiet nicely, a blow through on the air line and it seems to have cured it running really well now ;-)

  • PRO Supplier
I would suspect that the crank seals have gone in machine allowing a degree of play and air leakage into the engine as it is moved side to side.  This causes poor running and makes it impossible to tune correctly.  Repair is possible with a strip down of engine and replacement of worn seals on either end of crankshaft.
  • I like to service my own tools if I can, I'm no numpty with a spanner and so far with the bikes, cars, vans and garden equipment I've got by ok..the only reason I posted this up to start with was to help me but also maybe help anyone else that does a search to try and cure problems that they may have.

TBH I also can't see the point in me paying some bloke in a shop twice what I earn to do something that I can do...the cutters have still been working so I haven't lost work, I've replaced one but as that works out it gives me plenty of time to fix it and helps keep at least part of my tool base younger which I'm happy to do, the long arm is for all intents and purposes now fixed I did  a full day with it with a monster Leylandii and it flew through it with the extension bar fitted...

Wouldn't be much help for people looking for advice if the block answer is take it to your dealer ?

  • The exhaust has coked up again so my burning trick proved a short term fix but at least help me diagnose the problem..a new exhaust has recently been fitted and it has restored the machine to it's good as new self, I'll order one up for my TPH2520S and either flog it on or keep as a spare...so anyone with a Tanaka hedgecutter a few years old if it starts loosing power don't necassarily thinks it's dead, the engines seem pretty bullet proof, it may just be the exhaust is clogged because of the rich mixture these things run on.

  • Tanaka run on standard 50:1 mix.

  • My dealer stated 25:1 the manual says 25:1 to 50:1..another dealer also stated the same 25:1, I'm happy to run whatever is best for the machine ?

  • I run 50,1 in mine.
  • PRO
If the oil is good quality ie Stihl, Husqy then 50:1 is fine. If cheap DIY-shed oil then 25:1....but will be smokey!

    Nick.
  • Yeah I've just googled and from what I can see from that Semi Synth can run 50:1any other 25:1, although in the states 25:1 unless California which is 50:1.....First dealer supplied Morris oils..the other that recommended 25:1 supplied Sthil oils, I run Sthil Red but may now look at others...? I'm also going to phone a few others to get more info on what the company line is !

Would be handy to run 50:1 as I'm carrying a seperate can for the Trimmers at 25:1 ;-)
