What is the best tablet PC for work?

Any of you guys use Tablet PC's for work.

Now that they are 'giving' them away *cough* free with new phone contracts I was thinking what use it could be to me for work.

Share the 3g from my phone (WiFi) to the tablet for data connection

Use the built in GPS as a sat nav function for the van

While i'm talking to customers I can email the quote as I stand and talk to them & maybe gather some other market research from them.

Show them my work / pictures/ website / facebook ect.

Maybe be able to run through product options more quickly than before?

I was talking to a landscaper a while back and he was telling me that he takes a picture of the flower bed/site ect. Then he shows it to the nursery, they then arrange the plants to suit and lay them out how it should be planted (He takes another photo). He then goes back to the garden/flower bed and plants them out.

Anyway before I commit to buy one I'm wondering what you guys out there use your tablets for??

  • I have a Blackberry Playbook which l use on site for calculations using excel for example.

Useful for taking good photos and videos.

Main purpose was to use as a portfolio tool to show photos when discussing options with potential clients.

  • Playbooks are really cheap at the moment and you can probably get a 64gig version for under 200.  Plenty of choices out there but I think a decent 10 inch screen would suffice for work like this.

  • I use an iPad, use the app invoice2go, keeps track of all customers who have and have not paid. Also I keep my diary online, so can access that from the pad. As someone else mentioned, it automatically backs up to the cloud, so it's on the computer at home. An add on to the app is receipts2go, where you can keep track of all your spending. I love it.

I don't do much landscaping, but if you show customers photos or even videos of previous job, it's a winner!

I got mine added onto my current mobile contract, extra £20 per month, includes a 3G data amount too!
  • Just downloaded the app not sure how I am going to use it I wonder if you had a small printer you could print of estimate or quote for customer only have iPhone 5 but should suffice not sure about the new mini pad is it bigger enough ?
  • How does the 3G sharing from phone to iPad work how do you do it do you have to pay extra

    it called iphone 3G tethering

  • If customers want a paper receipt I have a pad in the van that I got printed, blank invoice and give them a handwritten copy, failing that I ask for email addresses and emial it to them, you can get "air printer" that would enable you to print on the go, I haven't bothered with this. I had the app on my phone first but it's a bit fiddly, so I pad is better. I may have paid for a year subscription for the cloud , this would have been an in app purchase. Because the iPad holds all the info, I may not even bother with this next year, but if ever you lost the pad, without backing it up, it's all gone! You can click to sync all the info, or think there is a setting to do it automatically, if your 3G alowance is not small you may not want to do it this way, and wait until you get home and use your home wifi
  • The app uses its own servers, so once you log in off both your phone and iPad, it's syncs all the data
  • Tethering is if your iPad doesn't have a SIM card, mine does, that's what I mean about it having its own 3G allowance, failing that you can sync all the info when you get home off your home wifi

I was answering the question asked by Chris

there are 2 basic models, one that has wifi only and the other has wifi and 3g, if your ipad does not have built in 3G then it can be tethered to your iphone 4 or above
