Suggestions to tidy up our crumbling garden walls

Our patio retaining walls (about 10 years old) are crumbling, pics attached. I believe it’s a combination of frost damage (they’re not frost proof bricks) plus water seepage through the patio, which is moulded cement slabs over type 2. The patio is fairly large, around 100sqM, and total retaining wall area is around 30 sqM, height varies from less than 30cm to 1.3M.  What’s the best way to improve this at sensible cost - silicone rendering, or some kind of cladding?  I'm also planning to drill weep vents, would 10mm holes through to the type 2, with plastic tubing inserted, be sufficient?

Others will comment who are probably better with hardlandscaping than me, but I would say rebuild the wall with good bricks and proper drainage (I wouldnt think 10mm holes are anywhere near enough).

You'd just have to take up the first row of slabs, keep them and relay - anything less (I would say) would be a bodge

  • I would just bite the bullet and demolish and rebuild it properly im afraid, its probably just a single skin non frost brick and been built with no water protection on the rear and no weep holes.

If you render or clad it you will likely have future problems due to the water pressure/ingress, if you demolish and rebuild it properly it won't cost you much more and then its future proof

Depending on your plans & budget you could also just build a new wall in front, extend the patio and just leave this structure in and buried

Hope that help kind regards Torin
