stripped shoots on yew hedge

i did a seriously square yew hedge today but was left with loads of stripped shoots that left there white inards hanging out like bits of string laying vertically on the sides of the hedge.my blades seem pretty sharp though i had to use my customers electric jobbies to remove all the white bits.i think i need to sharpen my blades already but i am also thinking that it might be better to wait till the yews years growth harden off a bit before it is chopped..?anyone have any ideas?cheers neil

I have had this happen to me before. Its a sure sign that the blades need sharpening and possibly tightening up (nuts & bolts along the blades length).

  • Yew always needs a really sharp blade to avoid those stripped shoots...the blades need to be razor sharp. The bolts tighten down to a "stop" for want of a better word so tightening them will not achieve anything unless they have actually loosened off from this stop....unlikely as the nuts have a "locking" mechanism on them. I always find an angle grinder very quick..... 10-20 minutes... to sharpen. Be careful not to overheat the cutting edges which can damage the hardness.

  • A real test of how well set the trimmer is & how sharp. Sometimes best to hire for doing a lot of yew hedge!
