I have had this happen to me before. Its a sure sign that the blades need sharpening and possibly tightening up (nuts & bolts along the blades length).
Yew always needs a really sharp blade to avoid those stripped shoots...the blades need to be razor sharp. The bolts tighten down to a "stop" for want of a better word so tightening them will not achieve anything unless they have actually loosened off from this stop....unlikely as the nuts have a "locking" mechanism on them. I always find an angle grinder very quick..... 10-20 minutes... to sharpen. Be careful not to overheat the cutting edges which can damage the hardness.
A real test of how well set the trimmer is & how sharp. Sometimes best to hire for doing a lot of yew hedge!
