Strimmer line recommendations

Ive been using Husgvarna whisper line for about a year now, after it was recommended by someone on here as being very durable. Its very good compared to what i used previously, just curious to know if anyones found a newer product thats any better in the last year or so?

Cheers, Anthony

  • They say this stuff is pretty good.  More expensive but lasts longer.  http://www.oregonchain.com/pro/products/oep/TrimmerLine_MagnumGator...

I swear by this stuff http://www.desertextrusion.com/vortex.html

  • I use the diamond edge 2.4mm from these guys - Top quality stuff, Im using about 50% less than my previous line and it cuts much better in the wet.

I picked mine up locally. Strim around what ever you like, concrete ect. Seems to last forever

My stuff is 2.6mm... i think this is 2.4mm

  • I baught a reel of B&Q's cheap and nasty yellow line last year (I was using polycut blades but my supplier didn't have any) To be honest it cut well, was very cheap and lasted ages! I'm using Stihl square line at the mo, but find it prone to faying, and I'm getting through it like theres no tomorrow!

  • Thanks Duncan for your input regarding the 2 mm line.

Will give it a go and see . Might be a bit kinder to lawn edges too.

I tend to shy away from the aggressive line anyway and stay with the common stuff which feathers at the tip.

Nothing worse looking than scalped edges on a good looking lawn!

Probably a kind of thread drift, but, I just use Stihl stuff mostly and Oregon flexi-blade sometimes.

But I found by accident, had to buy 2mm line once as it was all they had in the shop, 2.4 recommended for my strimmers, the 2mm line took a bit of getting used to as it has less momentum but I find in gives you far better acceleration if you bog down and a tank of fuel last noticeably longer. You can ‘bump’ the line out further and get a faster ’tip speed’ without labouring the engine, with this extra speed it goes through pretty much anything the 2.4 will and it gives a far sharper cut when mowing with the strimmer.

Just bought another ten mile roll of it yesterday, it’s cheaper too.

  • Someone mentioned to me about submerging strimmer line in water for 24hours if the lines been sitting around for sometime, it gives it the strenth back as sun rays tend to dry the line out and it becomes brittle.

  • I think there could be some truth in that as the reason i asked about new products in the first place was not because im running out of whisper line, far from it, just that recently it doesnt seem to wear so well and has snapped a few times where it exits the head, never done that previously! Its always in the back of the van so never has sun on it, but i guess the fluctuations in temperature, especially on a hot day could have a drying effect on the plastic over a year or so.

Strimmer line in a bucket over night me thinks and see what occurs.

  • Sounds like it would be a good idea to have thicker and thinner line for different jobs/areas, i have to strim a lot on path edges/ curbs etc so i need the tougher stuffs durability, however i do need to strim lawn edges as well and althougth they look ok, i can appreciate the smaller diameter line would give a cleaner cut and probably look neater.

Thanks for replies so far, will defo try some of the line as mentioned above anyways

    Cheers
