I am new to this forum so please be gentle! The purpose of this post is to raise awareness about theft of machinery - I found you lot through a Google 'stolen chipper' search and discovered that one of your members was fortunate to get his machine back recently.
A couple of my lads were working roadside on Tuesday (3rd Jan - first working day of 2012...) and had a Greenmech 1928 roadtow chipper stolen off the back of the van when they were less than 50m away! This occured at approx 1.30pm on the A525 Whitchurch to Wrexham road (Shropshire/North Wales border).
I am offering £1000 cash to anybody who can lead me to recovering my machine - it has (or had!) serial number 8053, but there are many other distinguishing features I could identify if it were to reappear with another identity. Any info can be disclosed confidentially to 07970188050.
Please be vigilant - a loss like this is an absolute nightmare I can assure you!

I don't think that's off topic at all. Talking to the police and a large trailer/towing component seller this week it would appear that just about all hitch locks are relatively easily defeated by those with the knowledge and compunction to do so. Also, if you lock the hitch of a trailer when it is removed from a vehicle it is important to block the hole that the tow bar ball sits in (there are balls for sale for this purpose) as it is apparently common practice for thieves to sit the hitch onto the crown of their towball and strap it into place to allow the removal of the trailer to a 'safer' location for them to work on removing the rest of the lock. They apparently also grind their tow balls down so the trailer hitch will fit on without the need to undo the locking mechanism. I'll comment further on recovery products in the future if that's OK - we may have a very real test on our hands here with a bit of luck...

It was our company that had the last chipper stolen so I know what you are going through.
Get in touch with the manufacturer and make sure that they know in case the villains go looking for spares.
The more you publicise the theft, the harder it is to sell in the UK and the more vigilant other owners will be.

Sounds like Timberwolf did a great job for you David. Greenmech are also incredibly helpful and I am confident that alarm bells will ring if any of their dealers are approached with this machine. There are far more ways of identifying the machines than just the serial number even when they leave the factory as standard which is nice to know. The manufacturer backup is one of the best reasons to buy British made machines in my opinion.
