Stihl KM 94 - Air Filter Screws Stuck

I'd been using my Stihl KM 94 for work and I realised I hadn't cleaned the air filter in a long time. I went to undo the two screws (Is-M5x17) holding the air filter in place and they were really stiff. When I finally got them to move they just spun in place without coming out. How do I get them out and why have they done this? It's usually a 30 second job ☹️
