Spreader

Good morning all

I need a new fertiliser spreader and would like some advice on what to buy. I have been using an Earthway Shoulder Spreader for a couple of years but the mechanism for adjusting the application rate seized up quite a while ago resulting in too much guess work. Any recomendations will be much appreciated.

Thanks Jim

The earthway 2150 is a good mid range machine. The industry "best" is normally thought of as the ICL / Scotts SR2000 (with flippable side barrier), but this is double the price. We use these all the time and they are very accurate, well built and will last much longer.

Longevity will be extended by regular cleaning and not leaving any material in them after use.

Hi Andrew thanks for the reply and advice, is a wheeled spreader the best option even with relatively small lawns. I don't do loads of mowing or lawn care.

  • What's the typical size of your lawns?

Hi Dan, I have one at about 800m2, the rest are pretty small from 450m2 down to tiny little ones on mobile home parks which I tend to spread with a little hand held machine.

      • Mine are the same and I'm finding no need at all for a push spreader. The £40 evergreen one is great and doing a fine job for me.

Is that a hand held spreader Dan? Could you post a link please?

I find the solo spreaders work well for me, easy to calibrate and have a good coverage and hold around 9kg of granules.

      Thanks Dave they look good.

The hand spreaders are good for lawns upto around 300 sqm. They do work well with lots of control and good for tight spaces. You can use on larger lawns, just takes longer. They don't work too well with 3-4mm granules, better to go around 2mm.

Don't bother with the cheap copies in garden centres.

Just be carefull re calibration and dose, there isn't any really. We do via weight, a full scoop is just under 3kg of fertliser, so will cover 100sqm @25-30g/sqm; you'll need to pace yourself to put it all down correctly. It's either 1 pass slow or 2 passes perpendicular.
