we got a 4kw system fitted two years ago. we are on the south coast and directly facing south. we were lucky and got them before they lowered the fit payment scheme, but then the cost was a lot higher to get them installed. Its paid us about 3000 in the 2 years we've had it, not counting what its saved. from the saving's point of view our electric consumption has gone down by about 2/3rds in the good summer months and by about 1/4 in the winter. I wouldn't touch the rent a roof schemes, and it may well make your house harder to sell if you have that, rather than the ones you have paid for , own and can transfer onto the next buyer. if you are going to go for it, go for the biggest array you can afford
Kevin Holland of The Solar Shed helped with an article that my partner worked on, he was very helpful and knowledgeable, his site is at:

Thermo thanks for the info, quite right rent a roof sounds like a wide boy scheme.By the way every time I see your user name keep thinking your part of the cast of Last of the Summer Wine!
Craig am looking into that site, cheers
I got a 6.5kw system installed mid june, 9k install cost. Not sure if our payments are different over here in Northern Ireland, we get 17p per kw produced which has earned me £480 so far plus im saving around £30 per month on electric costs plus earning another £20 per month exporting the electric i dont use. I run a couple of large pond pumps and uv lights/filters all summer or i would have been exporting a lot more. My pay back time should be around 5 years with that government payment guaranteed for 20 years.
My brother installed a set at the start of January and has earned just over £900 so far in the government ROCS payments and has cut his monthly bill by an average of around £60 per month. At the last meter reading 2 weeks ago for July, August and September he happened to be there when the man came to read it and worked out from the readings for import/export that after exporting his surplus at 5p per unit and buying electric at night at 17p per unit, he owes a grand total of £8 for the 3 months!
i had a 3.5 kw systerm fitted 3 weeks ago monday so far it produced 182 kw .
