Soil testing Kits

morning all- wonder if anyone can help me. i need to order some soil testing kits- when i was in the uk i used this type (the little plastic pots)

http://www.amazon.co.uk/TENAX-SOIL-pH-TEST-KIT/dp/B00166IOP0/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1297682599&sr=8-15

but i've noticed there is an offer on the probe type

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Draper-54655-3-in-1-Soil-Tester/dp/B00023T95C/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1297682599&sr=8-2

i just need a basic ph reading one- can anyone recomend the probe type or should i stick to what i know?

i would stick to what you know and is cheapest to be honest it all gives you around the same reading just depends on how exact you wish to be with it

  • thanks Neal- thing is i live in Portugal- and although its cheaper to start with i need to get them sent out here- with the probe thingy i only need to buy one and it will last me for several tests. i don't need to be really accurate just whether the soil is on the acid or alkaline side. i've seen the probes used by colleagues but never sure whether they actually work?!

just buy some litmus paper im sure you wil be able to find some in portugal even on ebay and i think the postage for that would only be a couple of quid for 2-3 little books of it then that would last you for ever
  • ok great - thanks both of you- i'll stick to the traditional method and order the litmus paper- much better idea!

  • Could your local Farmacia not get hold of some litmus for you ?
  • Hi Roger- good idea- I shall ask them, thanks!

  • "Papel de tornassol" apparently :-)  Don't know about where you are but here, the majority of Farmacia staff speak pretty good English.
