Your spot on IMO. I'm also a smoker but I wouldnt dream of smoking in front of a client, its unprofessional.
Agree with you on the smoking.................... can't see a short, say half-a-minute call will do any harm but general chit-chat no. We'll be banning cups of tea next:)
I don't employ but I see friends that do, their biggest gripe with mobile phones at work is every time they send an employee to the van to get a tool they return 20 minutes later after obviously calling a mate for a chat whilst out of sight of the boss, I would say leave phones in van and check on route to next job, call off teas for the peasants and call off Christmas.......;-)
Trouble is, I make half minute calls and think other people can as well!! Then I remember the missus who's on the phone for hours lol.
'Bang on the button'! Phone calls during their own time - ie breakfast and lunch break - which they adhere to.........when I'm around! Two customers last week mentioned that 'one of' my lads spent 'a fair bit of time on his phone'. So another reminder is required!
The problem is that you can't ban them, as I often need to contact them.....and them me!
Cant ban them regardless as I found out today its covered under the human rights act and mobile phone banning is only allowed if it has the potential to cause harm or ignite things i.e. chemical/fertiliser sites. Im not a huge fan of them whilst working but I will contradict myself as this past week or so I've had to use mine a hell of a lot more than I like for personal use.
I think it should be a two way street when it comes to phone use.
I often asked staff to stay on late to get a job done. I expected, in return, that these staff members should have some flexibility to deal with issues during working hours.
All parties know when a sensible line is crossed.
I provided key staff with mobiles (pre-smartphone era). These phones were sometimes used (sometimes excessively) for personal calls. I deducted these call costs from wages.
I once caught a member of staff standing on a compost heap (to get a better signal) texting one of his girlfriends from his personal phone and receiving texts from another girlfriend on his (our) company phone.
