To protect it I've got an OtterBox Defender case. Double layer protection and screen protector keeps my phone all lovely and shiny inside!

I got mine from Amazon for about £25. They do them for blackberrys and other phones aswell

I've had it 3 months now and am yet to scratch the "Gorilla glass" It's been covered in soil on numerous occasions and fell out the van once, normally by this stage my new phone looks about twelve month old, I really do like the defy the only negative I have is that I have to charge it every other night unlike my old samsung that would last 4 days no bother,
Other than that I've had no problems with it

I fancy a Samsung Solid B2710 when my old phone finally dies:

Although it's only got a 2" screen, it's reasonably cheap and has a few gadgets on it.
I have the 3GS, although you would get the 4 if you were getting it now. It has a glass screen so it is very durable, doesn't need silly screen covers etc. I don't have any cover or case on mine and, sure it doesn't shine like it's new but operates like new certainly. Well, almost. Few bumps and scrapes.
I have dropped on every surface and to be honest don't even worry when dropping like I did other phones before; it is very strongly built and I would even say built for the sort of abuse we give them.
Don't look past iPhone, you won't regret.
I recently brought the samsung B2710 due to my old nokia 514 died0 which I had since 2004. I've had the samsung about 4 weeks and so far for a basic phone, wouldn't call it a smart phone, its performed quite well. Its very user friendly and only took a short time to get used to the interface after being used to using a nokia for so long. To be honest it all depends on what you want to use your phone for. I thought about getting the Motorola Defty but to be honest all I want from my phone is to make calls send texts and maybe check email and be tough and so far it has failed that already dropped it in the bath and of course it was fine. The two main things i like about it is that the torch operations from a button on the side regardless if the phone is on or off but do watch out as it can turn on if you lean on the button accidently and waste battery power and also the fact it has big buttons compared to normal so no need to take gloves off to answer the phone. My only problem is that somehow i've scratched the screen which is annoying but isn't to much of a problem. Another problem is that whilst sending a text it can sometimes freeze and then after a couple of minute restart but after turning the 3G off it hasn't happend for a week.
Watch some of the you tube videos of the phone in action, Like a Sonim can take a lot of punishment and for half the price of the new JCB tough phone pro and most sonims.
