Actually I haven't got round to doing this, I was thinking about a removable sign as I've seen a local gardener with a magnetic sign on his van and it looks ok. Guess that's a bit different to having graphics all over. I reckon if someone is going to pinch your van or whatever is inside it, then they'll do some research and unfortunately use opportunity. I wouldn't be paranoid about it. I think its as likely they'll find out where you store your gear and rob that if they want to, as I've seen it happen to expensive motorbikes.
The point is, get it done if you have a big enough van, I see no point of going around in a plain boring van.
We have a van and a Cabstar tipper. Have never had a vehicle sign written and never been short of work. Work quality, competitive pricing, a site board and being able to sell yourself has worked for me.
If it's a security thing then good locks and an alarm are important, I'd guess that they'll attack a van regardless of what the signwriting says if they think it's possible.
I suppose it depends on your market. One of my clients requires the van to be signwritten: it sends out the right message to their tenants when I turn up, or go to look at a property, and I agree with them. I only have the company name on each side, though, with no contact details, as I don't want to spend every evening fending off calls from people looking for the cheapest rates!
I have no sign writing and have no issues getting work - I avoid it as I know of far too many cases of of travellers marking up vans and following them to taKE Tools - dirving around with what amounts to a sign saying "Strimmer, hedge trimmer and expensive mower within" does not apeal to me - My thoughts were re-inforced when my rear doors were prized open (still have to open them from the inside 18 months on), by travvelers/gyspsies etc looking for tools - Sign writing IMO just allerts people to whats inside.
Keep your van CLEAN smart and wear liveried clothing - thats enough for me.
mine are magnetic - they come off when i don't want them.
got them from donegal signs, who i recommend as being good at making the signs and very well priced :)
he also did my pavement stick ons. the permanently written van signs are great, and i accept that magnetics are a trade off, but people don't know they're magnetic - when i take them off, people are always asking if i've got a new van, i normally tell them it's just part of my fleet.
+1 :-)

I think it is one of the cheapest and easiest forms of advertising you can have and gives a good professional impression generally. Although no sign writing is better than bad sign writing.
Always use a plain van... as others say.... its telling the thieves what you may well have inside. If you've enough work anyway, is it a good idea even though it does look more professional? Reminds me of some "travellers" who drove past me when I was working on a front garden.... they asked for my card as they might have some work to put my way...... wasn't till afterwards I guessed that they really wanted my address to rob me!!
Defiantly sign write, I'm being stopped for my details and not by the law for towing my caravan on weekend breaks away in Devon
