Should the clocks be changed forward ?

There's been a few moves over recent years to change BST by 1 or 2 hours. See this : http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/cif-green/2010/mar/26/british-summertime-change I can't decide if it's a good thing or not - dark mornings and brighter evenings sound good, but we tend to get out earlier to miss the rush hour and get on site before the hordes arrive. So for us, we would be out working for longer in the dark first thing in the morning... What's your view - good or bad idea?

I think now there's a diiferent spin on it - namely cutting power consumption, costs and being greener - whether that's enough I don't know ?
  • i hate changing the clocks back leave it be please
  • I need 12 hours of daylight all year round. Let's move the country nearer to the equator. I'm fed up with gardening by head torch.

  • You're right - I remember that! It stayed on BST all year round, I remember the armbands too!. It would definately get my vote now, I hate the long dark evenings.

Showing my age, ( and I stand to be corrected on this ), but didn't we experiment with this in the late 60's ?

I remember us all being issued with reflective armbands, etc. and being escorted to school because it was so dark.

I'm 29 by the way in case you were wondering ;-)
  • What Gary, you are only 12?

Do your parents know that you are up this late?

Apparently this was trialled between 1968 and 1971 i.e GMT +1hr.

    I was 5 - 8 and don't remember it....but as they say " if you remember the 60's you were'nt really there"!

  • So Rowly, for the South West meet up shall we all keep a look out for a 12 year old hanging about outside the Pub?

Sounds like a strange sort of Pub?

I was a bit slow there Steve but as you have correctly pointed out Master Cobb is then... doing the maths 12-13.

    That fits!

Someone should warn his wife and his somewhat older children... there could be serious legal implications here.

I was concerned when he said he was escorted to school!

  • Is nobody gonna thank Colin for the vid ? Brightened up my evening without playing about with the clocks (hope I've spelt that right :-)

Changing the clocks, back or forward doesn't alter the number of daylight hours. The tilt of the Earth's axis would need to change to achieve that. If you find the winter month's have too much darkness maybe you should migrate like the birds, and go South for the winter.

You are allowing the imposition of man's clock to dictate, " dark mornings and brighter evenings".
For people who work outside with the seasons, we should be more in tune with the natural time cycles and less by the 'clock'.

When people say, "I like to have the extra hour in bed", I often wonder, Do they think they are time travellers?

You should try not following the clock for a week, a month... much less stress.

I'm in favor of this and have been writing and emailing yearly to my MP for the last 10 years regards this. Geoffrey archer tried to table a private members bill to change things prior to being expelled.

The reason why it has historically not been popular is due to kids in Scotland having to walk to school in the dark, with devolution this argument lacks water as Scotland can now do as they please on the matter.

Not true if that were the case we would have done as we pleased a long time ago ;o) But as has been pointed out changing the clock won't make a great deal of difference to lighting levels , all propagander started off by some loonie MP who had nothing better to do with his time LOL .

i have a lot of customers i cant go to till after 9 so lighter evenings is better for me (some like to stay in bed and others are residential contracts)

Same here, started at 9.15, by 3.30 distinctly murky and time to pack up and go home
