scarifiers

I am looking to replace my Bannerman B-LT scarifier, which is 14 years old. It has been extremely reliable and done hundreds of hours of work, but blade life is an issue. As most of the lawns I maintain are a bit uneven you have to set the blades deeper than is ideal so the tips are often catching the soil which makes them wear very quickly. I have tried the thicker vertislicing blades too but the spacing is quite wide with them.

I'm thinking of trying the Billy Goat PR550H which has flail blades. Has anyone got experience of this machine or opinions on scarifiers with flail blades in general?

We have a bannerman scarifier with fine blades, but only use on fine laws or bowling greens etc. Nice machine. Otherwise, on most lawns, it's Eliet 401/501's with self sharpening fixed blades, with about 80hours life per set. For very poor lawns / bullying a lawn, we use an Efco machine with thick flail blades - a bit of a crude beast, but good for the rough stuff.

Thanks for that info Andrew. I see that the Eliet 501 is available with fixed, loose or double cut blades. Maybe I will look into the loose blade option for moss/thatch infested lawns and keep the bannerman for the better ones.

the 501 with fixed blades copes admirably with heavy moss. Would get as preferance over loose blades.
