I've never like the electric scarifiers. They are really just a rake, and don't get right down to remove the thatch and aerate the roots.
I hire a machine in for the occasional times I need it. It does a proper job, and it makes it easy to charge for the equipment at a fair rate.
I've found the domestic electric scrarifiers surprisingly effective and got a terrific amount of moss/thatch out the lawn. True, as Paul says, they won't go right down into the soil but I reckon they're pretty good for the price. I had a Black and Decker one for years and worked well. (till it expired under all the use it was getting!)
Thank you Geoff, Gary and Paul. 3 Varied options there! I'll probably try out an electric one (power supplies ok) for this season.
