scag help

I have a 36 inch swz scag. The engine is running fine and strong untill you engage the blades and it splutters and struggles to turn them. Sometimes it randomly engages and works normal untill you hit thick grass then splutters and struggles. It might work better on choke but I think this may be my imagination! !!Any ideas guys?.Many thanks

Hi, with all these engines the amount of fuel used is tiny until you engage and work the blades so I would check fuel flow and as a first stage look at changing fuel filter and spark plugs. Failing that you may need to look inside the carb.

  • Hi, I agree with Derek, I had a similar problem with my 36" Great Dane it turned out to be paint in the petrol tank from the inside of a knackered jerry can used by the previous owner - nice easy place to start!!
  • Its only a recent problem, the last week the machine has been outside exposed to the elements. Water in the fuel system some how? Ive ran £50 of fresh unleaded through it this week though.
  • Not familiar with this engine (Kawasaki?) but sounds like the governor (no, not you!!) might not be working properly. There will be an arm or rod that goes from the engine to the carb......check that it moves freely in both directions.... rev it up quickly and see if it moves..... the linkages may have partially seized, freeing off every now and then. If its not moving, spray some WD40 over any linkages and do the test again.

  • Thanks guys, ive got my mechanic coming so ill put it to him but will check the govener first. To clarify, its job is to send more fuel to the engine when its under stress? Makes sense
  • In line fuel filter! Sometimes its the simplest of things!
  • yes basically....... when you hit long grass/engage blades.... it effectively opens the throttle to give more power. Bit like pressing the accelerator on the van when you're going up hill in order to maintain the same speed. Without it, the machine will just stall or slow down significantly.
