I've used a Makita hedge cutter that I bought 2nd hand off my mate as a backup for my sthil and echo cutters. It has been used and abused for the last 10 years and has never been in the repair shop. I have carried regular maintenance on it, as with all my kit, but not once has it let me down, my sthil and echo machines however have. Never tried or even seen makita lawn mowers, but if my hedge cutter is anything to go by then its a wise mid budget starter mower. Makita have a good name on thier other bits of kit such as drills, rip snorters etc etc so could be worth a punt, especially as its being sold with a tradesman warranty for a year.
Amazon are selling them for a little over £415.00
I believe Dolmar chainsaws (which are Makitas rebadged) are now the most popular pro saw in somewhere in Europe, I think it was Slovakia.
Several Formula 1 teams also use makita hand held blowers to help with the cooling of the car when it comes in, which must say something about them.
If it's a wheeled mower for that money I'd be looking at a used Etesia, not a new Makita, unless there was a servicing agent nearby I knew would put me at the front of the queue if it went wrong. It's not going to be built for commercial use, in and out of a van all day, and little things are bound to break.
It's not what breaks that matters, or whether it's under warranty, it's how fast you get it back again. If it's a machine you rely on, same-day is pretty essential!
If it has to be new, a 19" Honda is bigger, and arguably has the better engine.
Thanks Paul,
I'll look into the situation re servicing agents nearby.
do you know where would be the best places to get a reliable used Etesia?
cheers
Nigel
I've just paid £200 for a 2nd hand pro46 on ebay. It will be used as a backup but runs perfectly!
