  • Do you mean force?
    obviously a 4 ton roller weights 4 tons, and exerts that force on the ground. At varying speeds, and grades it will have a varying force on the ground and in the forward direction - Newtons 1st,2nd & 3rd laws of mechnics will explain everything to do with force.

  • I assume we all accept that and guess the question is about ground pressure. A Chieftain tank is 52 tonnes and it was an article of faith that you could put your foot in front of the track, let it drive over and no damage would be done...never felt inclined to put it to the test though!

  • i know it weighs 4 tons stationary but as soon as forward motion is introduced the downward force must then be reduced,the roller is about 7 feet wide and stands about 4 feet high,water ballast filled,although its this big,only a 7ft long 6 inch strip is in contact with the ground at any one time.im sure im correct in assuming the greater the speed the less downward force ie less than 4 tons.i was trying to explain this to a lad going to quickly

  • Am no expert, but I reckon the downward force is the same whatever speed you do but if going slowly you exert that force for longer...hence more 'squashing' or whatever the technical term is.
    By my estimation, assume width 200cm, weight 4 tonnes and that an average 4cm of 'ground' is in contact with roller. Therefore 800 sq cm is being rolled at any one time, which, simple division suggests to me, means you are applying 5kg of weight to each sqcm of 'ground'. Your speed dictates for how long you are applying this pressure.

  • ill try to explain a bit better than before.....4 tons is 4 tons sitting in one place that weight is a downward pressure,............cant be bothered
