Ride On Mower Advice Pls

Hi all I am looking at buying a new or very low hours mower as above for our orchard and also for other use locally.

We would like something that spreads the clippings but with the option of adding a collection box when necessary.

So far I have looked at the Mountfield 1538m-sd and Husqvarna lt154 but have no experience of any of the makes or models.

I should add the ground is uneven and rough in places.

Any advice is much appreciated. Ed.

  • Hi I'm surprised no one else has commented on this so I'll give some very general and vague advice as I run a westwood and therefore have no experience of other manufacturers except for husqvarna.

I owned a husqvarna for a brief period and have to say I was quite pleased with its performance. It wasn't a side discharge one but the build quality was quite ok. I'd be less inclined to buy a mountfield as I see them as a step lower than husqvarna but I have no experience of them and may be wrong. Honda also do various sizes but probably cost a touch more. You get a honda engine on it though and they can be worth the expense. Build quality is on a par with husqvarna. There are loads of others (Efco, Toro, Viking) and I think it's a case of doing the research.

Grass collection or mulching deck may be a consideration. Do mulching decks cut the grass finer or have some other design that reduces clipping visibility once cut. If so then it might be a deciding factor. Side chute collection (as in the husqvarna) seems a potential problem to me. The grass has to go along way uphill in a chute. Blockage is likely I reckon.

In answer to the bumpy ground issue then I genuinely think you have to respect these machines and their limits. Drive slower so it doesn't rattle everything to bits or take out a second mortgage and buy a kubota.

Finally what does your local lawnmower dealer supply and have good knowledge of. Not a deciding factor but useful if (and maybe when) it goes wrong.

    Sorry it's vague

  • Thanks Neil that doesn't sound vague. I'm beginning to understand the concept of mulching, but as long as the mower spreads the clippings without causing the windrow effect you sometimes see it would be good enough. I like the look of the Westwood range!

The dealer I visited was keen to sell me a Mountfield although I preferred the specifications on the Husqvarna.

Locally there seems to be a wide choice of makes so really would just like to know what the LJN regulars favour?

  • Just to round off my thoughts and given there hasn't been other postings on this topic i reckon small and middle sized members will run Hondas, husqvarnas, westwood/countax, john Deeres and toro with the odd smattering of Vikings and cub cadets. The big boys will all be on kubota

The Etesia brush cutters (AK88, AV95, AK85) are good for really long stuff and not too bothered by undulating ground - we have a video of one here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzVUXpNwcyk

They're pretty small for access too, just above a metre wide (depending on model). Not sure where you are but you're welcome to pop in here and take a look at one if we're local! (we are BN5 9QY).

    mvehh new style

this will give you etesia collection when you want it with the option of a deflector aswell

also will except a mulch plug if mulching is needed at times aswell

its a 100cm cutting deck so would be nible enough around an orchard

  • I'm in Bristol. Very impressive range of machinery there. I can't justify professional quality kit as none of what it will do is paid work.
