Resin bound aggregate

I have started offering this service recently and its a very easy and quick way of getting great results.
However i have a concern. I noticed that the tree pits that have been down approx 12 months in the town centre (completed by a different contractor) are sprouting multitudes of weeds!
Is this the norm for this type of surface?

  • I dont know if its normal - but Ive seen it on many Council done tree pits - the issue seems to be the aggregate used is a) too large leaving small gaps between particles b) its not consolidated together really, more heaped loosely and left to set.

Id imagine this is due to them wanting as much water to enter the tree pit as possible... and obviously small dirt and then weeds!

The problem is that the gravel has been laid on soil.the proper way to install resin bound tree pits is to install tree soil ,then loose gravel then then resin bound gravel.
  • Hi Gareth
hope this will be of some help to you!!!

The typical depth of resin bound Permeable Paving surface: aggregate size of 10mm requires a 40mm depth layer this need to be this size to allow the tree to get enough water, smaller aggregate does not do this

Sub-base laid by others in well compacted layers
A 150mm minimum depth of well compacted Type 3 granular sub-base to
SHW clause 805 or 4/40mm, 4/20mm blinded with 2/6.3mm crushed stone
    graded concrete aggregate. EN12620.

A suitable depth of well compacted reinforced tree sand worked well
around the root ball to minimise settlement.
A geotextile membrane should be use to stop any weed growth and used as a separation membrane between
    sub-base and soil layers.
