Relocating to Shropshire

Hi everyone, I'm new round here but am impressed with the scope this forum covers and how helpful you guys all are....so here goes,

I've been based in the South East for the last 20yrs and finally have to re-locate to somewhere else in 6wks.

I'm packing up my landscaping and maintenance business of 13yrs to move back up northwards and am looking to base myself around Shrewsbury. I don't particularly want to live in Shrewsbury itself but within 5-10 miles of it would be ideal. Going to start off renting until we figure the best place to be based.

I have been wondering how much work there is around that area and where it would be good to base myself so i am not a million miles away from it and getting to suppliers is not a logistical nightmare. At the moment we are looking all around the area but it would be good to know if its better to be north of Shrewsbury or South say. What about the areas south of telford, ironbridge and Bridgenorth. Also been looking in the Shropshire hills around the Mynd.

Is it more a garden maintenance part of the country or is there a healthy demand for landscaping which is my preferred line of work.

At the moment i am unsure whether i will even start up again for myself, at least to start with as i quite like the idea of subbing (tired of working on my own, which is how its been recently), especially since having a daughter as i've noticed that i have  even less time than before so it may be a  good compromise to sub for a while. It would also be a good way to meet local people in the industry. There must be guys out there like me who need extra pairs of hands when it gets busy or big job comes in.....Anyone need anyone. Fully skilled in all aspects of landscape gardening, (which i should be after doing it for the last 20+yrs!).

I would be interested to know peoples thoughts and wisdom about any of the above.

  • I'm doing exactly that in Cornwall at the moment.

I think it's good to rent to start with. You can see where the work comes from, and be flexible enough to move around the area a bit if you need to. There's work everywhere, but I've certainly found a different sort of enquiry from the towns compared to the more rural areas, and even with locals compared to people who've moved from "up country".

One thing is to get good references in place, as I've found some people to be wary of why I've moved so far and left a successful business behind.

Get active on the social media as well. I'm getting enquiries off the website, google searches etc. after just a couple of weeks, as actively adding content pushes you up the rankings fast.
