  • I'm alway amazed how many people get away with out one, I saw an advert on gum tree from a garden maintenance company looking to rent an somewhere so they could burn their waste!

I saw that Ad (but I guess we both see the same local gumtree site ;-) and was surprised.

It suggests they do not know better as otherwise you would not go public with that request....would you ?

And talking of green waste, one of the teams has had to go clear 2 tipper loads of cut conifers at a local business/industrial park we maintain.....some 'people' in the industry DISGUST me....:-(

  • Flight tipping is despicable. We are based in Middlesex and we see loads of flight tipping around here. Its not uncommon just to see a pile of mixed rubbish dumped in a layby. For what its worth Gary the perpetrators cant be classed as part of the industry. #usualsuspects

From within the "industry" I agree, but some customers struggle or ignore the fact of who they typically are...

With the complexities of EA Licensing through to admin hassle of Waste Transfer Notices to the expense (~50% of general waste disposal is landfill tax) I can see why it happens.

True green waste disposal should be Tax free as it should not be going to Landfill

Customers need educating that legit waste disposal costs.....

  • Done, like Ashley said better to be safe than sorry.

  • Very true..... they're usually our "traveller" friends. There's 3 sites near me in Dunstable and they're regularly dropping loads of conifer prunings etc in the small adjacent lanes nearby. I'm afraid no waste permit etc will make a scrap of difference as they frequently clone number plates and give false addresses.By the way, it's actually "fly-tipping" rather than "flight tipping" which you do when you fancy the stewardess!! Why it's called fly-tipping I haven't got a clue.

  • Tipping on the fly perhaps Geoff ie without stopping?

Anyway had my registration for agricultural wastes, I assume that's correct? So we now have to issue transfer notes to our customers as well?

Very kind of them to make it easy to part with £150. You do get a green piece of paper with a pretty foil hologram for your money though. Just another cost to justify to customers and to account for in your prices. I registered higher tier for garden clearance work, even an old broken fence panel needs a piece of paper if you touch it. I don't see any benefit apart from playing by the rules, certainly domestic customers don't know don't care, all they ask is how much and when will it be done. I don't blame them.

I did hear word of 'multi agency' roadside stops in my area recently, vosa wheel tappers, environment agency looking for waste licences and council wombles checking for no smoking stickers. Is it value for money ? Will it stop fly tipping ? I'm not convinced.

  • Russell, this isn't new. We've been required to pay the £150 for a three year ticket already. If you didn't pay it, you were carrying commercial waste illegally, regardless of how small an operation you are.

My local tip had to enforce it when the EA camped outside, so the new free option for lower-tier is a fantastic change for me. I now save that £150 fee, and can show the client the paperwork to prove I can't take away that broken trampoline for free.

Of course I'd never suggest showing your waste disposal receipts to clients to prove your business costs, as that would be considered un-professional by some, but it works for me and keeps the clients happy!
