You've got to wind the "spool" first to tension the spring..... wind it in the right direction though about6 revolutions........ hold the spool to stop it springing back, feed the cord through the casing hole, into the spool hole and knot it..... release the spool with the handle on the other end of course!

you'll need to tension the spool anticlockwise,(looking at it from underneath)... just had a look
