rear roller walk behind lawnmower

Hi all,

Im looking to buy a pedestrian walk behind mower with a roller, with work for 3 full days a week, 8hrs cutting approx per day.the largest lawn is approx 1,000 sqm at a time.A problem I forsee is that the contracts are for every two weeks, normal here, and thus am I running a risk by buying a rear roll mower? By that I mean the length of grass between cuts and the ability to pick up in the wet. I realise these are eternal questions but if someone had to choose one from whats available to me locally sabo, john deere, toro(hayter???) or honda which would they choose, if at all?

Rear rollers are not used so much in this neck of the woods and I have only recently gone out on my own since moving from Ireland;Any or all advice would be appreciated.

Happy new year to everyone

  • The roller mower will be fine for fortnightly cuts and will enable you to cut overhanging lawn edges. Everyone has different ideas about the ideal mower though but usually, the more you pay, the better it will be. Personally, I found a 21" mower too heavy and not very manoeuvrable for domestic work so I use an 18" Masport which go for about £600 though I just picked up a brand-new one on Ebay for £400. Make sure any mower has not got a steel deck as they will rust through fairly quickly. I also prefer a belt drive rather than a gearbox as they seem far more reliable and cheap to maintain whereas gearboxes often fail quite quickly with very expensive dealer repair costs.

  • Cheers for the advice guys,

I was kinda hoping someone would give the john deere the heads up, as there is a supplier local.Unfortunately the choice is limited here but that may not be a bad thing. Anyway thanks alot again and keep safe
