Hi Harry
I'm impressed. 45 boxes:)
I made three small nest boxes and hung them up this spring. Although I think maybe I was a bit late. They remain empty.
What I am chuffed about though is that I put up an owl box just over two years ago and this year I've got at least two barn owl owlets.
I had a little stand-off this evening. I think it was one of the owlets (it was dusk and inside a barn so difficult to see properly). It sat in the entrance looking at me for at least 3 minutes. Dropped back into the box and then popped its head out again.
I think the young ones are about to fledge.
Here is a recording I made a little while back. The owlets are quite scary. The picture is of the box but the recording was made at night.
Isn't it scary!
One of the adults (I'm assuming the male) is getting very protective. I was up near the box at dusk yesterday and it was screeching at me and flying around the old cow yard.
Changing topic. We have an abundance of Nightingales here.
I stood right under one (I didn't see it as it was in a thick hedgerow) a couple of evenings ago and recorded it singing. Id you listen closely you can here others close-by (I counted at least 5 separate Nightingales singing).
45 boxes full and an owl! That's amazing - move over Springwatch!! Have you thought about setting up any cameras?
I hope to set up a camera in the owl box this winter.
I managed to get a photo of one of the owls. Not too sure if it's an adult or one of the young.
That's so sweet! Must be lovely to just watch (perhaps with earplugs! That noise!!), especially if you can catch the adults hunting or bringing food back to the young - looks like he spotted you too!
Sounds like you have some great wildlife around with Nightingales as well, enjoy :)
45 nest boxes is impressive and it's a real boost for nesting birds.
I've seen a lot of nests this year so far, several blackbirds, robins nesting in a barn and another in some ivy, great tits in a shed, and another pair in a nest box. Saw some wren fledglings being fed by their mother.
Great photos Phil, barn owls need all the help they can get.
