Public Liability Cover

Hi all,

I known that this discussion has gone round before but I'm in the process of starting up for the first time and have been looking into public liability cover and was wondering what kind of ball park figure I should be looking at for a yearly premium and any suggestions on the best providers.

Cheers

  • Depends on a few things Will - How much cover you go for - the premium will be dependent on your choice to go between £1M to £10M cover etc. Also, are you covering your tools in this policy? I've tried a few in recent years but with direct line for £5M PLI cover and tools.

Try Giles Insurance. Great people to deal with and saved me £300 when I moved from Simply business two years ago.

It really depends on the level of cover you require - in terms of millions for liability/height working/kerbside work, etc etc, etc. If you specify here what you think you will need you'll get a better set of answers to your original question. The search box is a good place to start - from recollection NFU stands out as a favourite, along with Simply Business. But DYOR eh? :->

There's a big button top of screen that may help you :-)

Does depend on a number of factors, including t/o, but expect it to be sub £100.

I would add that if you intend to pursue commercial work, be it either town/city based lettings & rentals agencies or the London/Birmingham facilities managers (eg: Mitie/CRBE/etc/etc) you'll need more than the bare minimum of liability cover (=£1m).

You should see how much PL is required for working airside at a major uk airport. Answers on the back of an envelope please!
  • Nick - how much does a jumbo cost ? "Whoops, well you shouldn't have parked it there should you guv !"

Will - you need numbers. I used Simply Business as per link, Phil I'm sure the affiliate fees will come in useful ;)

My policy is underwritten by AXA, public liability 1M (£250 excess), no employee liability, my tools in van £3000 (£300 excess), hired tools £5000 (£500 excess), policy is garden maintenance exc tree work max height 3m. Paid £261. Maybe I need to look for a cheaper quote next time lol.

Russell, you have far more than a PL Policy there, which is where the extra cost is..

Anything to do with insuring tools, bumps it up disproportionately ...:-( Pure PL is normally 'cheap' unless you had a claim against you or want more than £5m cover

  • thanks Gary, not so bad then after all then.

Still want to know how much it costs to hoon a van around a runway, c'mon Nick !

  • Nick, I'd guess £250 million? But then, I did my snowplough training today, and together with the airside driving exam I have seen the people who get through the selection!

Simply Business are great, and should be c. £100 for a sole trader. Tool cover is very open to clauses that mean you could never realistically claim, so beware and read the small print.
