Apple and Pear trees should be pruned around Feb/Mar so I reckon there are a fair few exceptions to the deciduous tree rule. I'd rather take the advice of Dr Hessayon than the beeb!
Hi there,
If you prune most trees, exception of the list above , in the dormant season i.e late autumn/ winter, then the wound sits there without healing until spring.True there are no pest or disease around to infect the wound. For me anyway, if its at all possible, prune in early spring when there's sap flow movement and relativley no pest and disease risk. The tree begins to heal immeditely. If you prune in summer, you run a bigger risk of infrection. Makes sense ???HOWEVER pruning in the dormant season may be essential if you wanna work :-) . the choice is yours
