Pruning overgrown privet

Hello All,Looking for some advice on dealing with an overgrown privet. A client of mine has asked me to prune a privet, normally not a problem. However, on this occasion the privet is approx 10' tall at it's lowest point and rises to about 13' and has very thick and knarled branches. The client is looking for the top of the hedge to be level from it's lowest point. My trusty HS80 is out of the question and a chainsaw is the option. Basically will the privet grow back into a nice green hedge?

  • Chainsaw would make a bit of a mess of it I should think I would get in there with some decent loppers and tidy up with the hedge cutter, they will grow back from some pretty harsh cutting but sometimes never really look good for sometime.

It depends on the thickness of the stems as to whether you'd need to use a chainsaw it certainly wold be the quickest option; the other tool to consider would be a bow saw with a new blade or as Mark says, use loppers.

In my experience, old Privett hedges respond very well to a hard prune but I'd be loathed to try in in the middle of summer (although, saying that, Privett should still cope with a hard prune at any time of year).
  • Thanks gents, I suspect loppers & bowsaw maybe the neatest option.

Did a similar reduction on a privet last year using a combo platter of chainsaw, silky, loopers and hedge cutter.

Did another job for the customer last month and the privet hedge is going strong.
