Privet Roots

Hi All, went to see a job today, 16 metres of Privet Root, (the contractor who put in the fence were supposed to have taken them out before putting the fence in, and they cut the privet down without removing the root. Can a rotavator be used on Privet Roots to get rid of them? if so what rate does this come in at?

Thanks Bradley

  • A rotavator will not remove roots, it might cut them up a bit but they will always grow back. You will need a mini digger for this. Is the fence directly above the old hedge? If so you will probably need to remove it first to do the job properly.

  • If you're not planting anything else there, can't you just leave them? If any start growing, treat the new growth with Garlon. I would be surprised if a rotovator could get through the roots.

  • Surely a local stump-grinder specialist could knock this out easily? No need for a digger or chemicals.

  • A mattock and a strong chap is the ideal tool for the job!

That's what I would use. Alternatively a brushwood killer such as Grazon Pro might prevent kill it off if it starts to grow again.
