Pricing a turf job

i know theres no set price on metres square (unfortunately) with loads of variables . But is there a rule of thumb. I have seen a couple of stories on facebook of customers paying £800 ish for tiny new build back gardens. One thing, i have no way of knowing if these are real or fake news.

Im in manchester. working on a 36 metre square garden. was 100% full of flowers, which i have almost cleared. have priced up the turf. asking lads here how much they think is a few labour quote. lastly, one man job

  • I take it you mean 36 sq.m. Graeme.  If you have already completed and charged for the clearing, then all you have to price is prepare and lay.  Very worse case, including hire of rotorvator + day to prepare + day to lay + cost of turf + profit. You should know your dayrate, quality of soil, access, rubbish away etc.

Obviously you do not want to overly stretch yourself but really it shouldn't take much more than a day depending on how much prep you need to do! If you're not sure, give yourself a day rate, add on material profit (ie you may get turf for £3/m2 but you charge £4.5/m2 etc) and all the usual bits- Rotovator, waste etc. Once your happy with cost you could then divide the cost by 36 to give you overall cost per m2 for future reference!

    Good luck

    • on new build gardens, and there is plenty of them in my area, i am charging £25 per sq metre, that is rotovate, rake level, take out all builder rubble and lay rolawn medallion turf, one person should be able to do 35sq metres in a day easily

      • I really dont get it , £900 to supply and lay 35 sq mtrs ! Is that what folk pay in your neck of the woods ?

        • Nick, i used that figure only from the post i seen on a fb group. Basically where cowboys took 800 upfront and threw down turf. The photo/ post shows more details. I wasnt expecting to get 800 and im not getting half that.

      • £600+ per day labour Phil, very nice!!

  • im in south Manchester too dont do a lot of turfing but £800 is not unreasonable its not the cheqpest place too live!

  • It's also important to remember that these jobs are often one-offs. A little flurry of turf jobs this time of year aren't paying me and my two guys all year around. We'll do them if at a good mark up or not at all. Can you make more turfing than a days mowing on a tight route? Not by a great deal I'd argue.

    • The main difference will be the fact that ALL i do is supply and lay turf , so that is my bread and butter and not a job that comes along every now and then.

Always interesting to hear someone elses point of view , never too old to learn something new.

I have just quoted for a turfing job. £8.25 per square meter buying the turf at £4 per square meter. On top of that I have a guy coming in with his fancy machine that prepsres the ground even burying stones it comes across.
