Planting in a heatwave

Having worked in nearly 32 degrees most of last week I'm wondering if anyone else feels we should set a limit on the time of year when planting as it seems unprofessional. Is the customer always right? I had advised Autumn or Spring but it didn't work out that way...

  • Working in a nursery this is a question always rumbling around... we want to sell plants all year round, but as gardeners ourselves we know that planting in hot and dry weather is often disastrous. Trees in particular seem to be everyone's favourite summer planting job, and the number of times I've tried to dissuade customers from buying trees in dry weather... just nobody tell my boss!!!

I've explained again and again how important good watering is but I'm never sure if the customer is listening or just nodding their head... I wonder if pet shop owners feel the same way, that advice is being ignored by easily bored consumers who think they'll just make it up when they get home?

In hot weather even the best watering practices might not be enough for some plants, but nonetheless we have to focus; unless we can afford to lose business during dry spells we must simply advise our customers on how to get the best from our products/services while allowing them to, if they wish, take the risk.
