Plant Identification Books

Dear all

I have spent a few days looking online for a good easy to use book that is dedicated to the identification of common plants, shrubs etc. I have bought a couple but been disappointed with them!

They are not laid out in an easy to use order and seem to assume the only time you need to identify plants is during their flowering seasons. (pictures of them when they are in flower) Not much help if all I can see is a stem and possibly leaves out of season. Does anyone have any advice or recommendations for books?

On another note, but still with a book theme, why are there very minimal books available on 'Kindle' such as encyclopedia of gardening? Now I love books you can flick the pages and smell their newness however not very practical when carrying a whole library with you!! Also surely more eco friendly having electronic versions! What do you think?

Hope you all have a lovely Christmas!

Simon

Have you tried the RHS encyclopaedia of plants (I think it's called that will check tomorrow as it peeing down and its in the truck).
Try the link at Amazon I've got 2 of the three at the buy together bit
It's big that's it's downfall but on the other hand if it's not big it's missing loads out. Would be a good one for kindle on a tablet iPad etc not normal kindles as its full of pictures.
    • Thanks Richard

Already purchased the 1993 edition on Ebay for £3.69 bargain! wasn't sure it was available on kindle for Ipad but will check your link out.

      Thanks again

Gardening books kindle into Amazon search box and it brings loads up
  • Hi,

If you think trying to find a decent guide to plants is difficult you want to try and get one for weed identification, it's nigh on impossible! A field guide to weeds or an Observers guide would be useful.

    • Unfortunately cant fin the RHS Encyclopedia as an e-book. Still looking! Be great if all three bundle package could be e-book. Id buy them all!!

Hi Jeff - Have you looked at the 'Expert' series for weed identification?

      • Simon, thanks for the tip, I had no idea there was was an 'Expert' book on this subject. Not sure if it'll be any good but I've ordered a copy. I can name most of the common weeds and even tell the difference between Shepherd's Purse and Hairy Bittercress but there are one or two plants that stump me! Hopefully this book will help.

Have a look at http://www.rightplants4me.co.uk/ Simon.

The site belongs to an LJN member. It was quite a big project build in the mid-2000's. I'm not sure if it's totally complete but the plant database is extensive. There's not a mobile version  so it's a bit clunky on an iPhone.

There's a comprehensive search facility and you can limit plant searches to just those that are included in RHS courses.
