Pig Flu

Has anyone on here (including your family or friends) actually had Swine Flu? Most reports are that it is mild (as long as you don't die) and doesn't last more than a few days.I have supplied the family with small bottles of hand gel which we all use regularly (hoping the teenage boys are telling the truth) when out in the land of pig panic without soap and water.Been feeling increasingly bad as the day has worn on. NHS website symptom checker didn't say 'No' but "contact doctor" which means I now have to find a 'flu friend', not an easy task if you have Swine Flu. Thinking back over the last week and wondering if I should inform clients who I have been in contact with, luckily one lady who is pregnant isn't on the list. Will wait and see if I can get up tomorrow, if not then my new found 'Flu Friend' (if one is found) can have a ring round.Probably be alright in the morning (?) but have to be by Thursday 8am. Off to collect new puppy!

  • I have already spoken to people who work with me about this one and said if even if close relatives get it take time off immediately. The large majority of our customers are elderly and some of them have cancers and other illness's. It is very worrying (not getting but passing it on to customers) and I'm turning into a hypochondriac now as every little symptom is swine flu.

Look on the NHS website at the comments that people are leaving about how they are feeling when they get swine flu that may give you a better indication of how it may feel.
  • i tried to post this the other day but i have to do it in 3 parts i think -sorry
Influenza spreads between humans through coughing or sneezing and people touching something with the virus on it and then touching their own nose or mouth.[76] Swine flu cannot be spread by pork products, since the virus is not transmitted through food.[76] The swine flu in humans is most contagious during the first five days of the illness although some people, most commonly children, can remain contagious for up to ten days. Diagnosis can be made by sending a specimen, collected during the first five days for analysis.[77]
  • Recommendations to prevent spread of the virus among humans include using standard infection control against influenza. This includes frequent washing of hands with soap and water or with alcohol-based hand sanitizers, especially after being out in public.[78] Chance of transmission is also reduced by disinfecting household surfaces, which can be done effectively with a diluted chlorine bleach solution.[79] Although the current trivalent influenza vaccine is unlikely to provide protection against the new 2009 H1N1 strain,[80] vaccines against the new strain are being developed and could be ready as early as June 2009.[81]
  • Experts agree that hand-washing can help prevent viral infections, including ordinary influenza and the swine flu virus. Influenza can spread in coughs or sneezes, but an increasing body of evidence shows small droplets containing the virus can linger on tabletops, telephones and other surfaces and be transferred via the fingers to the mouth, nose or eyes. Alcohol-based gel or foam hand sanitizers work well to destroy viruses and bacteria. Anyone with flu-like symptoms such as a sudden fever, cough or muscle aches should stay away from work or public transportation and should contact a doctor for advice.
  • Social distancing is another tactic. It means staying away from other people who might be infected and can include avoiding large gatherings, spreading out a little at work, or perhaps staying home and lying low if an infection is spreading in a community. Public health and other responsible authorities have action plans which may request or require social distancing actions depending on the severity of the outbreak.

i hope this clarifys that its not worth worrying about if your healthy and wash your hands and stay away from (people and mainly children) Rob - from Wikipedia'
  • Kerrie,

    keep us posted!

I seem to be heading that way - I have a friend who seems to have contracted it and it turned out a mild case of flu - but then again without proper tests there is no way of knowing for sure.

symptoms were sore throat, mild flu , aching of joints, fatigue
im at the sore throat stage (developing today)
  • I'm staying away from the quarry studios at the mo. My blacksmith colleague gone down with a wallop. Started with coughing, uncomfortable throat and sniffles three days ago. He tried to work through it for two days (thanks pal! my fingers and toes crossed) but gave up to his bed. He wasn't sure at first, thinking he'd caught a cold from his son but a clients wife warned him her husband had just gone down badly concerned because they had been in close contact previous day. Pretty decent of her. So it's real but does seem to effect people in varying degrees tho I'm concerned about my mother and ma-in-law both quite dependent on us and have heart problems. I'm doing my shopping a ten p.m tomorrow!
  • My 22 year old son had it--not too ill--a fever of 103F for 3 days, body aches, but not much loss of appetite. He took Tamaflu and was well within a week.
  • my three kids had it,3,4 and 7. and it knocked them for six and worried the bejesus out of me, the 3 year old being the worse hit.
temps over 38.5 ,vomiting and a lot of sleeping,(seems to be the main symptoms around here according to school mums)
docs advised 7 days house arrest,so i obviously went to work.........i think being covered in mud, crap, grease etc means my anti bods are pretty good..........................................................atishooo
