phormium tenax and frost protection

Hello i live and work in the chew valley area of somerset and have a customer who would like me to plant several phormium tenax {green and purple} around a pond area, i have bought the plants and am now slightly concerned about planting them. The chew valley had frost twice in the past week and quite alot of the gardens i maintain have lost phormiums over the winter. i believe that tenax is the most hardy but only to -5  any suggestions will be greatfully recieved around frost protection the area that they are being planted in is slightly more sheltered witha few trees and a wall to one side i was thinking of planting around them ? and maybe creating a micro-climate or do you reckon a bit of fleece would be ok ...... what would you do ? thanks !

  • No would not fleece them now.

Most Phormium that were lost over the last Winter were through temperatures below -10 and snow.

We have around 100 in 10 litre pots that made it through the Winter and they are going outside this week in sunny Dorset, with no fleece.

  • Thanks for your reply i think im gonna go for it and plant them all up just had a bit of dought in my mind re weather conditions,

that gives me a year to come up with some ingenius frost protcetion solutions for next year ! thanks
