Pesticide storage

Hi all,

Just wondering how everyone stores their pesticides. And yes, before anyone asks, I've got my PA1/PA6.

As I live in a flat and have no outdoor storage space or lock up my only option is to keep them in my van which my instructor assured me was fine. I need something like a Chemsafe storage box but they are expensive.

Any other option?

  • Is that all that's needed Paul?

I know it needs a bund but don't they have to be totally enclosed or have I got that wrong? Don't have racks in the van. It has to be a metal bund right?

In van in lower bunded  portion of racking, No chemsafe.
  • Just be careful. Just remember that should any chemical spill it has to be contained and not only the liquid or granuals but also the vapours etc. I would store them in a sealed box container that has a sealed lid. There are plenty on eBay.
  • Are you talking about purpose built Chemical/pesticide container's Mark? If so, what makes should I be looking for on eBay? Cheers

  • Er, sounds hairy mate.

I wouldn't worry yourself overly, my understanding is that the van acts as a locked box so in order to fulfill the transport regs you need to have the containers secure and inside a waterproof bund, mine is just ply racking with the protektakote paint taken up the sides of the chemical bay (to make it water tight) and some absorbent matting under.

In my old van I had the same setup and it survived a front on  crash at 40mph with a 18 ton Lorry with no leaking the main thing is to make sure the container can't move .

We have two metal bunded containers used in the vans. They have 2 handles and each one holds 4*5L - cost about £150 with stickers etc.

In the Unit we have a bunded pesticide cabinet on legs where we keep our 'stores' - although we don't keep much as our supplier is just down the road.

I also have seen a plastic/ABS version (lightweight) advertised around the £100 mark.

Side tracking - our insurers wanted to know as well. We should display toxic stickers if transporting such stuff.

In addition we have a restriction that if we are carrying fuel in containers, they must also be firmly secured in event of accident. Ie we are not covered for consequences if 5L of fuel flies around van in accident and causes a fire.

The insurers are getting more and more comprehensive in their requirements now...I guess any excuse to deny a claim....

  • Can you recommend a make Gary?

Also, how do I know if the box has an appropriate sealed bund? Would a standard metal van container suffice?

  • All good advice and all I can add is don't forget your emergency action plan document!
  • Don't really want to go for Chemsafe, just want to comply with regs as lowest cost poss!

Its fine, it all depends to what extent you want to go, my van has a full bulkhead so im seperate from the load areas, the container cant move and any spills are contained.

Anyhow you can do as you please, if you want to go for a chemsafe then go for it.

  • Nice one. I'll have a look
  • Cheers for that, I'll have a look

    Box container

Perhaps this may be of interest to you as its all kitted out ready to use. It states ventilated to prevent build up of fumes??. All the others have vapour seals that Pitchare sell. I take it you need to select the right box storage for the right chemical.
