Hi Ben, have you looked at the possibility that nematodes may be at work here?
They can cause a fungal/bacterial infection which thrive in moist conditions.
Watch the spacing between plants and avoid wetting leaves when watering.
Also I'd try removing infected leaves. Other than that your guess is as good as mine.

Further more there is a common disease called Anthracnose.
As with nematodes try to keep a good distance between plants and avoid direct watering on leaves.
