Pay Scale

I have been using a self employed general skilled labourer, I have been paying £100 per day, generally from 8 until 4pm, and I pay the same even if we leave the job say to let things "set" as early as 3pm, he is now asking for 110 per day a 10 per cent rise, is this rather too much, any thoughts would be good, working mainly in Medway area

Who supplies tools, PPE, insurance & transport ?
Does he work exclusively for you ?
    • no he does other work from time to time, he brings his main tools, and drives to site

I'd suggest if you peel that rate down he's not far off living wage and personally think his rate rise is reasonable, if not more.

Remember he has to pay tax, liability insurance, vehicle costs, tools etc out that 'hourly rate' of £12.50 to get to your sites

Posts above ^^^^^^ have been deleted ?

In that case I'd suggest a bit of a chat to agree some productivity rates. Maybe he feels underpaid hence why he slows down ?

All my guys are employed so can't directly compare. The issues over the recent years years with IR35/CIS etc make it almost impossible to use self employed people predomiantly to staff a single business. HMRC take it that they are actually employees for the purposes of employment law (ie they are protected and you/business must pay their NIC/PAYE etc).

As a self employed person £12.50 - 13.75 / hr must translate into around ~£8p/hr take home pay?

    • ok thanks for your comments, will do

  • To be honest, I think £110 per day is reasonable. The question I would ask myself is: Would you do a day's work for less than that?
    • £110 per day is good money.........providing you work a solid 230days per year, which I doubt he will, which is why a subbie will be paid far more(per hour) than someone on PAYE.
