Painting the bed of my tipper van

I need to repaint the bed of my tipper and would be grateful for any advice. Is spraying an easy enough task? What prep do I need to do? Is it possible to just hand paint it with some hammerite? Does anyone know of any existence of a protective strip that you can put on top of the sides and the tail gate to prevent scratching the paint work when loading and unloading? I think I may have seen a truck with some aluminium checker plate does anyone have a supplier of this? All help and advice gratefully received.

Many thanks,

Charlie

  • Hi Charles

Have a look at this recent thread, it might be of interest to you.

  • Many thanks, I was only suggesting chequer plate over the tops of the sides and tailgate protruding down maybe about 50mm on each side. So far no joy with the spray shops as I have only found ones thaT deal in cars and they can't accomodate the height of the tipper with the bed up in the air so they can spray the front of it where it normally sits against the cab. Thanks for the advice though.

chquer plate is expensive stuff, wire brush and hammerite might be your cheapest option or you could take it into a spray shop for a quick going over, it wouldnt cost too much, an old boss of mine used to take the tranny tippers in for 250 quid full overspray cabs in green and chassis and back in black

  • Many thanks for this information. I guess a hand finish wouldn't look as good as a spray though? Roller might be a bit awkward with the slightly corrugated finish. I could do a bit on the inside of the bed as I i need to re-ply board out the inside although I was thinkink of using stokboard as it will out last the truck. Do you have any experience of bending aluminium chequer plate?

I would pressure wash / hose it clean then clean the rust off with a wire brush cup on the grinder as per colins sudgestion.

I would then apply two coats of Red oxide primer (buy from farmers merchant)  quicket method is to apply with  a 4" mini foam roller (toolstation)  then one coat of hamerite rolled on.

By the time  you have masked the cab, wheels etc you would be almost done with the roller and no sprayer to clean out or spray drift.

  • Many thanks for the pointer Martin. I read that thread with interest. Although it is more concerned with the inside of vans rather than the exterior I will certainly be using the advice it provides when I next kit out the interior of one of my vans. Many thanks, Charlie

    • No problem

One of the main uses for it is on flatbacks and trailers as it's impact resistant.

  • Where are you based Colin. You don't happen to know of any commercial vehicle sprayers in Kent, Surrey or Sussex do you? I am about to get a compressos or my newly acquired nail gun so I could do it myself. Trouble is I am not terrible good at that sort of think. Also I haven't witnessed a sunny windless afternoon in a long time! They seem a distant memory!

yes it was a commercial vehicle spray shop where we used to take the vans, they did lorries and buses. have you got a compressor? you could spray yourself on a sunny windless afternoon.

  • My brother is a profesional spray painter and travels if needs be. Do you want me to see if he would do it for you? Atleast then it could be done with an acid etch a zinc primmer and then 2pac paint to what ever colour you wished. his website is www.colorcoatingsltd.co.uk it is spelt the american way to stand out.

  • Many thanks. I will either try and do it myself or find someone locally but if i have no joy i will be in touch. Thanks for the offer though, greatly appreciated.

    • No sorry for any confusion

I thought you needed it to protect the insides of the bed.
