Over run by a day,do you bill extra

Customer paid deposit for the materials,we agreed on a balance of £700,job was to take 3 days to complete,100x 600mm sq paving stones,shed base and install a shed,running about a day behind,do I bill the customer for the extra day,blagg extra materials cost or just take the hit and try and catch up with the list day,anyone been in similar situations

  • Did you quote all in? So it was £xx to do all work?

    If so it's kind of a case of such it up. You'll make it up on another job.

    If fixed price I'd just take the rough with the smooth. Surely you've finished early before?

    Would have to agree with the previous replies UNLESS you can attribute the delays to any conditions contained within your T&Cs (ie like a hidden Anderson shelter while excavating, except you should flag this up to the client before expending extra time and had them sign off on a Change Control document and/or agree costs in writing).

    Otherwise I suggest it's all part of the learning process...some you win ...some you loose

    It will ensure you focus on your quoting for the next job :-)

  • You just need to suck it up and move on ! You estimated the time frame & the price so its you thats wrong. How could you justify the extra charge to the client? Even if there were extra material costs without finding something unforseen you would need to suck that one up too I think as its due to your estimate. The only way to get extra ££'s from client is to lie and you dont want to go down that road. Or just explain that you messed up and would like more but even then you are just playing on their sympathy and that would be wrong too. Its your time and in this situation you can only use it as a lesson learned.

  • Quote a higher price / allow more days on site next time you estimate a similar job to allow for delays / work taking longer than you expected. Especially with poor weather projects can over run, you've just got to get your cheque for the price you quoted and move on.

  • talk to him , were materials at cost? did u do 3 x hard solid 8hr days as quoted?

    was there an unforseen ; major root , concretee slab etc??

    ask for 50% if u feel its justified.... i just knocked off £20 on a full+ day hedgecutting as he asked for a bit extra and next door did to lop hedge top to match,
    i cut a tree top another day without agreeing price on there behalf & removed on trailer...

    got to be clear as i said to neighbour before ' clarity' , i was right but he may have knocked me down a bit anyway. i did job as needed finishing before birds nest too ! no thanks
