Oak vs Tanalised sleeper?

Probably been asked before, but apart from visual aesthetics of oak, is there much difference between longevity of either material when used as retaining wall? Should the oak be treated in anyway before it goes down?

Oak is better and suppliers say they need not be treated, however i bitumen paint the back of mine. You could also backfill with peashingle as you would for a brick retaining wall for drainage.

  • Tanalised sleepers you will be lucky to get 5 years out of them. Oak last much much longer!

  • Another benefit is no tar if walking near by, so cheap compared to new carpets!
