12 hours is not going to affect anything only the pay packet
It is making a stand against the new company that recently took over the contract.
A company which seems to be taking advantage, through pay, of their employees.
It will also undermine the company's name regarding how they treat their staff.
It may not help in the long run, and yes, the employees will be without 12 hours pay, but if you do not bloody the noses of these type of businesses, then you may as well just roll over and call your boss "master".
Good luck to them.
Can you deduce that from the article ?
I know not, whether OCS are taking advantage, but a quick bit of Googling suggests their pay is the same/no worse that when under Royal Parks control.
Is the pay enough? probably not and is not unique to OCS.
Are the Union's milking the situation ? Very probably
Designed to sell newspapers? 100% yes
Does it make sense to have everyone of the same pay periods? Absolutely.
Did they have to offer a bridging loan to help employees? No.
Perhaps it's ecomonies like that which helped them bid a lower price - I don't know and it can't be deduced from that biased article.
"Can you deduce that from the article ?"
I deduced my reply on Phil's post. Life experience has also taught me that striking (in the modern world) is the ultimate in last resorts & would have not been taken lightly by the members.
"I know not, whether OCS are taking advantage, but a quick bit of Googling suggests their pay is the same/no worse that when under Royal Parks control."
So all Royal Parks controlled contracts are fair?
"Is the pay enough? probably not and is not unique to OCS."
Obviously the pay is not enough otherwise the strike would not have been called.
"Are the Union's milking the situation ? Very probably"
A possibility.......
"Designed to sell newspapers? 100% yes"
.......but ultimately the selling of the newspapers will bring the employees story to light and will hopefully start tilting the balance of empathy towards those that deserve it.
Now that would make a pleasing change.

Unless lead into madness by overzealous Union officials.
"So all Royal Parks controlled contracts are fair?"
I did not say that, but to imply OCS are at fault/unique or taking an unfair advantage suggest the bigger picture is not being recognised?
"Obviously the pay is not enough otherwise the strike would not have been called."
Again, the whole industry suffers, so you can't focus on or rubbish one individual business.
"A possibility......."
Almost a 100% certainty

Not when the reporting is skewed or not indenpedant... and when has any Red Top ever been unbiased.
"Now that would make a pleasing change."
It would - but then as you know when you change from being an employee to running a business you are faced with realities and issues that as an employee one merely 'moaned' about....
If self employed, does one strike against one's self in an effort to get better pay :) ?
