northen utilitys (gas)

there is a lot  of work going on round this area with the gas mains, the problem is some of the mains go under some of the gardens they  say that they will reinstate and put grass seed down. can the  property owners insist they put a layer of top soil down then turf it, also can they insist on maintenance till it has taken i.e. watering as a lot of folk are on water meters

I am no expert on the legal technicalities but....... Years ago we had to have a new water main laid through our garden as part of a large building project nearby. I stamped my feet and said that it should be reinstated as they found it. It took terse conversations and a refusal by me to give them access to my property but eventually they agreed to remove turf and relay turf. I insisted on signing off as turf laying is an art that general water board 'ole diggers don't always have. In the end a good job was done but only because I insisted on it being returned to the condition they found it in. No idea if I had the legal right but for them it was the cheapest cost option and profit usually rules on these things.
  • done it with a field they ran a pipe through and left rocks on the surface - they require permission from you, unless they have an "Easement" in which case they can just turn up and do the work.
HOWEVER their Easement will also require they do no harm to your property or land, and must leave it as be, except for any unavoidable elements integral to the easement, IE access hatches, manholes etc.

I had 3 blokes picking stones out of my field entrance for a morning.... in the end made the come back, dig it up, griddle it and make sure the top 2foot was stone free. They mixed subsoil and topsoil together, and in a field that is just not on.
